First of all I’d like to mention that the following article strictly describes my views and research over the subject and individuals may or may not agree with it. I’ve just reconstructed a concept in the light of Islam and Astrophysics. Some of the content is directly rephrased from its original source mentioned at the end of the article and all the scientific calculations are based on approximation and assumptions, so therefore I take no responsibility in case you find them doubtful.
There is science behind every creation of Allah All Mighty. He created everything for a reason and whenever we investigated we found science behind the occurrence of every event. Living creatures die for a reason, the earth rotates around the sun for a reason and the universe is expanding for a reason. If He wanted He could do things without science or reasons but surely He wanted us to find Him in his creations and if there were no science everyone would have accepted His existence undoubtedly and all the atheists would have been the firmest believers.
Now if Allah doesn’t do anything without science so how can He let Prophet (P.B.U.H) travel seven heavens without it. Will He halt the whole system for a single journey? Off-course not! There must have been a scientific phenomena behind his travel and after months of research somehow I figured it out.
Scholars’ from around the world came up with different theories . Some said it was a dream as it is not possible to go to all the heavens in one night. Other said it was physical but they didn’t provide any proof for how it all got possible. In Quran, chapter number seventeen is named after this great journey “sura Al-Isra” which means “The night journey”. Its first verse states “Glorified be He, Who took His slave for a journey by night from Al-Masjid-al-Haram to the farthest mosque (in Jerusalem), the neighborhood whereof We have blessed, in order that we might show him of our Ayat(proves..). Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer,”.
The journey from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa mentioned in this verse is called al-Isra and name of the journey from here to the seven heavens is al-Mi’raj. Isra stands proved under the definitive textual authority of this verse and the Mi’raj finds mention in the verses of Surah an-Najm and is proved by a hadith appearing in an uninterrupted succession.
The Quran, Sunnah and ‘Ijma’ prove that the Mi’raj was physical!
It is proved from the text of the Holy Quran, and from a hadith coming in uninterrupted succession mentioned later that the entire journey of the Isra and Mi’raj was not simply spiritual, instead, it was physical like the journey of anyone else. The very first word of the Holy Quran in this Surah Subhan (Pure is He!) carries a hint in this direction because this word is used to register wonder or introduce a great marvel. Had the Mi’raj been merely spiritual, just a matter of dream, what was there so unusual about it? As for a dream, every Muslim, even every human being, can see it and report that he or she went to the heavens, did this and did that.
The second indication embedded in the word: عَبۡدِ (‘abd: servant) also points out in the same direction because ‘abd is no spirit all by itself, instead, it is the name of the combination of body and spirit.
In addition to that, when the Prophet (P.B.U.H) related the event of Mi’raj to Sayyidah Umm Hani (RA), she advised him not to mention it before anyone otherwise people would falsify it even more. Had this been the matter of a dream, what was there in it that needed to be falsified?
After that, when he did tell people about it, the disbelievers of Makkah called it a lie and made fun of him, so much so that some neo-Muslims became apostates after hearing the news. If this would have been the matter of a dream, the likelihood of such reactions was least warranted.
Now after getting enough prove of it being physical let’s focus on how this all happened in one night?
First of all let us take a look to a Hadith which explains the story of Mi’raj.
Paradise and Hell Muhammed’s famous visit to heaven (Sahih Bukhari)
Narrated by Malik bin Sasaa: The Prophet said, “While I was at the House in a state midway between sleep and wakefulness, (an angel recognized me) as the man lying between two men. A golden tray full of wisdom and belief was brought to me and my body was cut open from the throat to the lower part of the abdomen and then my abdomen was washed with Zam-zam water and (my heart was) filled with wisdom and belief. Al-Buraq, a white animal, smaller than a mule and bigger than a donkey was brought to me and I set out with Gabriel. When I reached the nearest heaven. Gabriel said to the heaven gate-keeper, ‘Open the gate.’ The gatekeeper asked, ‘Who is it?’ He said, ‘Gabriel.’ The gate-keeper,’ Who is accompanying you?’ Gabriel said, ‘Muhammad.’ The gate-keeper said, ‘Has he been called?’ Gabriel said, ‘Yes.’ Then it was said, ‘He is welcomed. What a wonderful visit his is!’ Then I met Adam and greeted him and he said, ‘You are welcomed O son and a Prophet.’ Then we ascended to the second heaven. It was asked, ‘Who is it?’ Gabriel said, ‘Gabriel.’ It was said, ‘Who is with you?’ He said, ‘Muhammad’ It was asked, ‘Has he been sent for?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ It was said, ‘He is welcomed. What a wonderful visit his is!” Then I met Jesus and Yahya (John) who said, ‘You are welcomed, O brother and a Prophet.’ Then we ascended to the third heaven. It was asked, ‘Who is it?’ Gabriel said, ‘Gabriel.’ It was asked, ‘Who is with you? Gabriel said, ‘Muhammad.’ It was asked, ‘Has he been sent for?’ ‘Yes,’ said Gabriel. ‘He is welcomed. What a wonderful visit his is!’ There I met Joseph and greeted him, and he replied, ‘You are welcomed, O brother and a Prophet!’ Then we ascended to the 4th heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in the previous heavens. There I met Idris and greeted him. He said, ‘You are welcomed O brother and Prophet.’ Then we ascended to the 5th heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in previous heavens. There I met and greeted Aaron who said, ‘You are welcomed O brother and a Prophet”. Then we ascended to the 6th heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in the previous heavens. There I met and greeted Moses who said, ‘You are welcomed O brother and. a Prophet.’ When I proceeded on, he started weeping and on being asked why he was weeping, he said, ‘O Lord! Followers of this youth who was sent after me will enter Paradise in greater number than my followers.’ Then we ascended to the seventh heaven and again the same questions and answers were exchanged as in the previous heavens. There I met and greeted Abraham who said, ‘You are welcomed o son and a Prophet.’ Then I was shown Al-Bait-al-Ma’mur (i.e. Allah’s House). I asked Gabriel about it and he said, This is Al Bait-ul-Ma’mur where 70,000 angels perform prayers daily and when they leave they never return to it (but always a fresh batch comes into it daily).’ Then I was shown Sidrat-ul-Muntaha (i.e. a tree in the seventh heaven) and I saw its Nabk fruits which resembled the clay jugs of Hajr (i.e. a town in Arabia), and its leaves were like the ears of elephants, and four rivers originated at its root, two of them were apparent and two were hidden. I asked Gabriel about those rivers and he said, ‘The two hidden rivers are in Paradise, and the apparent ones are the Nile and the Euphrates.’ Then fifty prayers were enjoined on me. I descended till I met Moses who asked me, ‘What have you done?’ I said, ‘Fifty prayers have been enjoined on me.’ He said, ‘I know the people better than you, because I had the hardest experience to bring Bani Israel to obedience. Your followers cannot put up with such obligation. So, return to your Lord and request Him (to reduce the number of prayers.’ I returned and requested Allah (for reduction) and He made it forty. I returned and (met Moses) and had a similar discussion, and then returned again to Allah for reduction and He made it thirty, then twenty, then ten, and then I came to Moses who repeated the same advice. Ultimately Allah reduced it to five. When I came to Moses again, he said, ‘What have you done?’ I said, ‘Allah has made it five only.’ He repeated the same advice but I said that I surrendered (to Allah’s Final Order)'” Allah’s Apostle was addressed by Allah, “I have decreed My Obligation and have reduced the burden on My slaves, and I shall reward a single good deed as if it were ten good deeds.”
Now let us see how Quran explains the relation between stars and heaven.
In Chapter 37 (Those who set the ranks) Allah says:
6: Surely we have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment, the stars,
7: And to guard against every rebellious devil,
In Chapter 72 (The Jinn) Allah says:
8: And we sought to reach heaven, but we found it filled with stern guards and flaming stars.
From these verses we learn that the first heaven is the one with stars. The nearest star from earth beside sun is proxmia centauri which lies at the distance of 4.24 light years and the furthest star may be millions of light years away. So even by travelling at the speed of light we cannot reach proxima under a night.
Let us study the characteristics of Buraq now
An excerpt from a translation of Sahih Bukhari describes a Buraq:
“Buraq, which is an animal white and long, larger than a donkey but smaller than a mule, which would place its hoof at a distance equal to the range of vision.”
Buraq is made of light like angels and is used for means of transportation of angels. As Buraq is made of light it has minimum 10 times the speed of light. It means that its minimum speed will be
Speed of light = 299792458 m / s
Minimum Speed of Buraq= (10*speed of light) = 2997924580 m/s
And if we assume the maximum speed of Buraq to be 10000 times the speed of light
Then Maximum Speed of Buraq= (10000* speed of light) = 2997924580000 m/s
When light takes 4.24 years to reach Proxmia centauri, Buraq will take 154.76 days at its minimum speed and if our assumption is correct then at its maximum speed it will take 4:12 hours approximately to reach it. But wait a minute! Proxmia centauri is the closest star to us. What about visiting all heavens within night? Even if you increase the Buraq’s maximum speed to a million you still won’t be able to reach the farthest star within few hours so how come all the heavens can be visited in one night?
For this let us study a theory of astrophysics, the theory of wormhole
Wormhole is a tunnel connecting two different points in spacetime in such a way that a trip through it could take much less time than a journey between the same starting and ending points in normal space. The ends of a wormhole could be intra-universe (i.e. both exist in the same universe) or inter-universe (exists in different universes, and thus serves as a connecting passage between the two).
Wormholes arise as solutions to the equations of Einstein’s general theory of relativity. In fact, they crop up so readily in this context that some theorists are encouraged to think that real counterparts may eventually be found or fabricated and perhaps, used for high-speed space travel and/or time travel. However, a known property of wormholes is that they are highly unstable and would probably collapse instantly if even the tiniest amount of matter, such as a single photon, attempted to pass through them. A possible way around this problem is the use of exotic matter to prevent the wormhole from pinching off.
Lorentzian traversable wormholes would allow travel from one part of the universe to another part of that same universe very quickly or would allow travel from one universe to another. The possibility of traversable wormholes in general relativity was first demonstrated by Kip Thorne and his graduate student Mike Morris in a 1988 paper; for this reason, the type of traversable wormhole they proposed, held open by a spherical shell of exotic matter, is referred to as a Morris-Thorne wormhole. Later, other types of traversable wormholes were discovered as allowable solutions to the equations of general relativity, including a variety analyzed in a 1989 paper by Matt Visser, in which a path through the wormhole can be made in which the traversing path does not pass through a region of exotic matter. However in the pure Gauss-Bonnet theory exotic matter is not needed in order for wormholes to exist- they can exist even with no matter. A type held open by negative mass cosmic strings was put forth by Visser in collaboration with Cramer et al., in which it was proposed that such wormholes could have been naturally created in the early universe. Wormholes connect two points in spacetime, which means that they would in principle allow travel in time, as well as in space. In 1988, Morris, Thorne and Yurtsever worked out explicitly how to convert a wormhole traversing space into one traversing time. However, it has been said a time traversing wormhole cannot take a person back to before it was mad but this is disputed.
Wormholes allow superluminal (faster-than-light) travel by ensuring that the speed of light is not exceeded locally at any time. While traveling through a wormhole, subluminal (slower-than-light) speeds are used. If two points are connected by a wormhole, the time taken to traverse it would be less than the time it would take a light beam to make the journey if it took a path through the space outside the wormhole. However, a light beam traveling through the wormhole would always beat the traveler. As an analogy, running around to the opposite side of a mountain at maximum speed may take longer than walking through a tunnel crossing it. A person can walk slowly while reaching his or her destination more quickly because the distance is smaller.
Now for sure you would have understood how this all happened in a single night!
In fact, the Prophet physically visited all the heavens. This universe might have an undiscovered network of wormholes. Maybe a wormhole is present a few light-minutes of the earth leading to the first heaven and is not transversible. If it was transversible then paranormal creatures like Jinn and devils would have travelled it as they are created from light too. As Prophet mentioned that there was a guard at the gate of every heaven so maybe that guard provides the negative energy (anti-matter) for the wormhole to become transversible whenever an allowed body tries to reach it. Prophet went to all the heavens carried by Buraq and passed through a series of wormholes which made this whole journey of billions of years possible in one night and that’s what the science of Mi’raj. Though some scholar’s claim that this journey didn’t take a complete night and was completed within a fraction of second. For them I would say that wormholes allows time travel so the journey might have taken more than a night but wormholes would have synchronized it with the time back on earth.
